Invitation from PAEMGS
Welcome to the first Joint meeting between the Pan African Environmental Mutagen and Genomics Society (PAEMGS) and the Society for Free Radical Research – Africa (SFFR-Africa). It is my pleasure to invite you to attend the Joint 8th International Conference of the PAEMGS and the 10th International Conference of the SFRR-Africa. Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic we are all facing, it was thought best to rather postpone this meeting that was scheduled for September 2020. We will now meet 15 -17 September 2021 in the heart of the Cape Winelands, in the beautiful town of Stellenbosch to discuss a range of topics related to redox biology, its role in disease development, mutagenesis, genomics epigenetics and environmental toxicology research.
The conference hopes to assume a hybrid format with a strong virtual component and the option for virtual registration is now available.
We have an exciting line up of excellent speakers in their fields and in particular we welcome and thank the two keynote speakers, each a true leader and pioneer in their respective fields:
- Prof David DeMarini, a genetic toxicologist with research interests in the mutagenicity of complex mixtures, mutational mechanisms, and genotoxicity biomonitoring
- Prof Okezie Aruoma, a medical biochemist with research interests focused on developing biomarkers and phytoceutical agents having the potential to provide early diagnostic and preventive treatment for diseases with overt inflammation
This will be the first joint international meeting of these two complementary societies, confirming the importance of multidisciplinary approaches to solve our unique challenges in health promotion and disease prevention. We aim to bring together academics, established researchers, emerging researchers, young investigators, postgraduate students and relevant Industry members from both the African continent as well as abroad making for an exciting programme to include Keynote addresses, Plenary sessions and speakers, Short oral presentations and Poster sessions with ample networking opportunities.
I urge all interested to visit the meeting website and submit your abstracts to be part of this exciting endeavour. The abstract submissions are now open online. The option to attend virtually will also be available to you for this 2021 meeting.
I look forward to welcoming you all to the heart of the Winelands for this exciting joint meeting.

Invitation from SFRR – Africa
Please allow me to extend a warm welcome to you all on behalf of the Society for Free Radical Research-Africa. This new conference has a tone of history attached as we partner with the Pan African Environmental Mutagen and Genomics Society. We are all looking forward to this event in Sept 2021, in the magnificent decorum of Stellenbosch. Circumstances were such that we had to move the conference initially scheduled in Sept 2020 to this new date; the impetus and motivation of both societies remaining intact to drive this conference forward. In the current context of multiple constraints this partnership is a laudable initiative consistent with the objectives to help our emerging scientists initiate sustainable research activities in African and island state countries. It is clear that the strategic need for research and its dissemination in Africa and neighboring islands has never been more pressing. SFRR-Africa and PAEMGS are fully dedicated to work towards rebuilding the image of African science by encouraging scholarship in biomedical, biotechnology, agricultural, environmental, nutrition and public health. Both entities further aim to foster collaborative initiatives and/or strengthen high caliber research in African countries. With the necessary financial intent (national, regional and international) and infrastructure to support research and not forgetting the necessary sustainable mind-set for development by the African scientists, these objectives are achievable. We have spared no efforts to prepare a stimulating scientific programme as well as enjoyable social activities. My wish for you is that you make the most of all your interactions and find even stronger ground for sustainable collaboration in this upcoming conference.
